The earthquake struck late in the evening, at around 23:00 local time, with its epicenter located southwest of Marrakesh, relatively shallow at 71km (44 miles) beneath the surface, according to the US Geological Survey. The immediate aftermath saw people flooding the streets of Marrakesh and other cities, seeking safety from the tremors. This natural catastrophe inflicted significant damage, with buildings reduced to rubble and streets strewn with debris, as captured in dramatic video footage.

The Long Road to Recovery

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) highlighted the extensive response effort required to address the aftermath of this earthquake. Hossam Elsharkawi, IFRC's regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, emphasized that this would not be a short-term response, but rather a commitment spanning months, if not years. Caroline Holt, operations director for the IFRC, stressed the critical importance of the next 24 to 48 hours in terms of saving lives and conducting search and rescue operations.

Residents and tourists in Marrakesh and surrounding areas shared their harrowing experiences. Mina Metioui,

a Marrakesh resident, likened the noise of the earthquake to that of a fighter jet, describing how her room trembled and belongings fell off the walls. Montasir Itri, residing near the epicenter, reported on the efforts to rescue neighbors trapped under rubble. Houda Outassaf expressed the profound loss experienced by her family due to the earthquake.

Tourists' Frightening Ordeal

British tourists Adam Smith and his girlfriend, staying in Marrakech, described their hotel as being "shaken to the core" during the earthquake. They, along with other guests, were compelled to evacuate and wait anxiously outside. The uncertainty of the situation left them contemplating the possibility of spending the night in the hotel's parking lot.

Community Support Across Borders

Moroccan communities worldwide expressed their solidarity and concern for their homeland. Chaimae, a Moroccan national residing in London, shared her anxieties about family in areas with substandard infrastructure. Social media platforms became a hub for support, with members quickly checking on each other's well-being and sharing donation links for charitable organizations aiding earthquake victims.

Ongoing Challenges and International Assistance

As the death toll continued to rise, it became evident that Morocco faces a long and challenging road to recovery.

Many areas, including remote villages and historic sites like Marrakesh's Jemaa el Fnaa, sustained severe damage. World leaders, including Britain's Rishi Sunak and US President Joe Biden, offered assistance to Morocco.

Uncertainty Over Sports Events

The earthquake's impact extended to sports events in Morocco. Questions arose about whether the African Cup of Nations qualifier between Congo and the Gambia, scheduled for Marrakesh, would proceed. Traumatized players faced conflicting decisions, with the Morocco-Liberia qualifier in Agadir already canceled. The Confederation of African Football engaged in discussions with the Moroccan FA to determine the fate of Sunday's game, which holds significance in determining qualifiers for the Afcon finals.

A Glimpse of the Devastation

The earthquake left a trail of destruction in its wake. Morocco's famous square, Jemaa el Fnaa, was hit hard, with historic buildings, cafes, and restaurants affected. The Jemaa el Fnaa mosque itself suffered damage, particularly to its tower. Rural areas, characterized by older structures, bore the brunt of the destruction.

Rescue and Recovery Efforts

Efforts to rescue survivors and provide aid commenced immediately following the earthquake. Marrakesh, in particular, faced severe damage, but hard-to-reach mountain regions also demanded attention. Hospitals saw an influx of injured individuals, prompting authorities to call for blood donations. In this challenging time, Moroccans rallied to support one another.

Infrastructure Challenges

Infrastructure issues played a role in the earthquake's toll, with older buildings in rural areas proving vulnerable. Communication difficulties compounded the challenges faced by residents and rescue workers.

The earthquake in Morocco has left a lasting impact, with recovery efforts set to continue for an extended period. The nation faces both immediate and long-term challenges, but the resilience and unity of its people remain unwavering as they strive to rebuild their lives and communities.
