A gas leak incident in West Whittier prompted the evacuation of numerous homes on Thursday morning. Approximately 75 residents from 32 homes were asked to seek shelter at the Phelan Language Academy on Cully Avenue while emergency crews diligently worked to contain the leak in a nearby neighborhood.
Strange Smell and Early Morning Evacuation
The unusual events unfolded in the quiet hours of the morning, around 1:30 a.m., when a vigilant resident detected an unfamiliar and unsettling smell in the air. Manuel Covarrubias, one of the affected residents, recounted, “Yes, the smell and the big noise around 1:30 … Officers came up and asked us to evacuate the area.” The situation was swiftly evolving, with an eerie cloud of gas emanating from a broken main on the street.
Efforts to Halt the Gas Leak
Despite the best efforts to bring the situation under control, the gas continued to escape from the damaged pipe as the clock approached 4:30 a.m. Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Siok provided insight into the ongoing response, stating, “We’re looking at a four-hour window now,” signifying the dedication of the response teams to resolve the issue in the safest and most efficient manner possible.
